  • In 1932, Indian freedom fighters Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru were arrested on the orders of British Viceroys of India Lord Willington for resuming the civil disobedience movement.

Summary of Today’s News

Savitribai Phule (3 January 1831- March 10, 1897):

  • Savitribai Phule is considered India’s first female teacher.
  • She and her husband, Jyotirao Phule, opened the first girls’school in India in 1848.
  • She was a social reformer, educationalist and poet from Maharashtra.
  • She believed that education should be available to all children, regardless of religion, caste, race, creed, or color.

Rani Velu Nachiyar (3 January 1730-December 25, 1796):

  • Rani Valu Nachiyar was an 18th century queen from the Sivagangai district of Tamil Nadu who fought against British rule to regain her kingdom.
  • She is known as the first queen to fight against the colonial power during that time.
  • She is known by Tamils as Veeramangai (“brave woman”).

Arun Yogiraj

  • Arun Yogiraj a renowned sculptor from Mysuru, hails from a family of renowned sculptors.
  • He is one of the three artists behind the creation of idols of Ram Lalla (Lord Ram in his childhood).
  • He runs the Brahmarshi Kashyapa Shilpakala Shala trust in Mysuru, dedicated to training children in clay modeling and other artistic skills.
  • His popular works include
    • 28-ft monolithic black granite stone of Subhash Chandra Bose,
    • a 12-ft Adi Shankaracharya idol for Kedarnath and
    • India’s largest 10-ft monolithic white marble stone sculpture of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.
    • He collaborated with GL Bhat of Bengaluru and Satyanarayana Pandey of Rajasthan for the creation of the Ram Lalla idol.
    • He chose the Krishna Shila stone from HD Kote, known for its non-reactive properties to liquids

New regulations applicable for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transaction

  • To expand the scope of UPI, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) announced several reforms.
  • UPI is a system that powers multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application.
  • It merged several banking features, seamless fund routing & merchant payments into one hood.
  • Inactive UPI IDs and numbers to be deactivated: It will cover accounts that have been inactive for one year.

Devika River

North India’s first river rejuvenation project, ‘Devika’, is in the final stages. and it will be soon dedicated to the nation
  • Devika River is considered the sister of the sacred river Ganga, and it has great religious significance.
  • Course:
    • It originates from the hilly Suddha Mahadev temple in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The new hit-and-run law

  • As per the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which is a replacement for the British-era Indian Penal Code (IPC), if a driver causes a serious road accident due to careless driving and then leaves without informing the police or any official, they could be punished with up to 10 years in jail and a fine of Rs 7 lakh.
      • Offenders in this category may face imprisonment for up to five years and a fine.

  • The EU was established by the Maastricht Treaty, which entered into force on November 1, 1993.
