Is it advisable to attempt previous years’ question papers as part of our preparation strategy for the CLAT exam?

There is no denial to the fact that attempting previous years’ question papers is an important and useful strategy for comprehensive preparation for CLAT. Engaging in such practice is not a suggestion but a word of advice to be taken seriously. There are multiple benefits of attempting the previous year question papers.

Firstly, practicing past year’s papers provides familiarity with the exam environment. Often when students prepare for the CLAT exam, they do it in an informal set-up. Due to that, students are not able to gauge the exact exam format and the level of stress, and therefore, students cannot come out with a specific strategy and get anxious while attempting their exam. In such cases, attempting past year papers gives students a taste of how the real exam would look like, and students are then able to craft out their own strategic approach for their exam. This familiarity fosters a sense of confidence, ensuring that aspirants enter the examination hall with a well-practiced and composed mindset.

Similarly, by attempting such papers, students get a taste of the exam format. Students while preparing for the CLAT exam focus more on theoretical understanding of the concepts as per the syllabus. However, it is a famous saying that Practice makes a man perfect. This is equally applicable to the CLAT exam as well because when students go through past years’ papers, they actually get to see the variations and difficulty level of questions, which resultantly, helps them to prepare accordingly, and if they feel they are lacking somewhere, it helps them to correct those mistakes, and be fully prepared.

Further, when students attempt past-year papers, they are able to gauge the recurring themes prevalent in the CLAT exam. By solving past year’s papers, students can gauge and understand the trends and recurring themes prevailing in CLAT and can identify those topics that would definitely come and are frequently asked or the concepts that are repetitively tested. Through this, students get invaluable insights and it helps them in attempting their CLAT examination with proper preparation.
