HC terminates 25,753 persons appointed in Bengal schools.

The Calcutta High Court recently issued an order to terminate 25,753 teachers and non-teaching staff appointed in West Bengal’s government-sponsored and aided schools through a State Level Selection Test (SLST) in 2016. A Division Bench declared the selection process “null and void” and directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate within three months. The court found the appointments in violation of Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution, leading to the cancellation of all appointments made in the selection processes.

SC grants Centre a week’s time to look into Karnataka plea for drought relief.

The Supreme Court urged the Centre and Karnataka to amicably resolve differences arising in a federal structure. The Union government assured steps to address Karnataka’s drought concerns within a week. Justices emphasized the equality of both Union and State governments. Karnataka sought financial relief of ₹18,171.44 crore due to drought, citing a total estimated loss of ₹35,162.05 crore. They emphasized the need for relief in crop loss, livelihood support, drinking water shortage, and cattle care, arguing that the Centre’s denial violated fundamental rights under Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution.

Gukesh earns the right to battle Ding Liren for the World crown.

Indian chess prodigy D. Gukesh clinched victory in the Candidates Chess tournament, scoring an impressive 9 points. At just 17 years old, Gukesh’s triumph makes him the youngest-ever challenger for the World Chess Championship, surpassing the record previously held by Garry Kasparov, who achieved this feat at the age of 20 in 1984.

Political space for disability rights, a sliver of hope.

Manifestos during election seasons often overlook discussions on the rights of persons with disabilities, but the promise of the Congress and CPI(M) to include disability as a specific ground for discrimination under Article 15 of the Constitution has sparked optimism within the disability rights movement. This demand, reinforced by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2019, has long been advocated for. Despite India’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2007 and the enactment of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act in 2016.
