How can candidates overcome period of self-doubt or frustration and stay committed to their study goals?

Being a student is not easy at all. One has to face a lot of exam pressure and also has to go through a face of self-doubt whether we can clear this exam or not, what will we do if we don’t clear this exam, or what will our parents think about us? Such questions are not new for any student and they must also not think that they are the only ones who have these questions in mind. It is a natural tendency for students to think about such frustrating, yet important questions in life.
However, the real question is, should we actually spend time thinking about these questions or should we just escape them? The answer is no, we should not. Running away from any problem only increases the distance from the solution. The journey for any exam is incomplete without self-doubts and there are two reasons for it. Firstly, any exam journey can never be as smooth as a car on a highway. The journey of preparing for competitive exams is like a small boat in an ocean. But, does the boat sink or not, is the skills of the captain. Similarly, in the race of competitive exam, a student is the captain of his own boat and it is his motivation and zeal to crack the exam that will help in sailing the toughest winds and waves without any problem. Secondly, self-doubting yourself acts not as a deterrence or frustration but rather as a positive source of motivation, which will help students to compete with more focus.
Nonetheless, the overall aim of a student should be to stay committed to their study goals. To stay motivated, a student should do mainly the following things:
A. Don’t create unworkable targets for yourself- One of the biggest sources of frustration during exams is that students fail to value themselves and try to set unrealistic targets for themselves. Hence, once a student is not able to meet those unrealistic targets set for themselves, they feel frustrated and self-doubt themselves. So, the solution is gradual improvement and a steady pace instead of rushing to the end goal. Set targets that are achievable and may also push you to do a little more than yesterday. The author of the famous book “Atomic Habits” says in his book that if you were able to improve by 1% each day for an entire year, and those gains compound, you would end up 37 times better at the end of the year. Therefore, do not set unworkable targets for yourself and focus on patience and steady growth.
B. Don’t compare yourself with others- You never know which person is in what stage of his life. It is possible that one student may have been preparing for the exam for the last 2 years whereas another student started preparing for the exam just one month back. Similarly, one person may have different resources to prepare in their lives while some may have fewer resources to prepare compared to them. So, there is no point for a student to juxtapose themselves with other students or even their friends. Instead, one can adopt the good habits of other students which has helped them in improving. Taking good habits of every person will definitely bring positive changes in yourself whereas comparing yourself with others will not bring more and more frustration.
C. Keep a Plan B, or even C- Very commonly, students enter into the phase of frustration during their preparation when they believe or ought to believe that there is nothing else, they can do in this life if they fail to clear this exam. Because of this, a student takes unnecessary pressure during preparation for their exam. It is totally a myth and no one should tell you that this is the end of your career. When a student is preparing for their exam, they are preparing to start their career and these exams are merely a run-away for a take off. They are not the end goals. So, once a student is preparing for a particular exam, they should keep a backup which can be in the form of an alternate exam, for example, a student preparing for the CLAT exam, may also take exams such as SLAT, BLAT, AILET, CUET, etc. Similarly, one may think of an alternate career. But having a Plan B is necessary. Through this, a student has security of mind that he is not totally dependent on the exam, and does not end up becoming depressed or frustrated. Although, this should not hamper a student from giving its best and a student may commit to their students diligently.
Therefore, life is a non-living element unless a person puts life into it. Do not let yourself put down just because you doubt yourself. Stand strong and face the exam as a battle.
