Summary of Today’s News

India beats Pakistan in New York

• India secured a narrow six-run victory over Pakistan in a low-scoring T20 World Cup match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. Despite a modest target of 119 runs, Pakistan’s strong start faltered after Mohammed Rizwan’s dismissal by Jasprit Bumrah, leading to a collapse.
• India’s innings saw key contributions from Rishabh Pant and a last-wicket stand by Arshdeep and Mohammed Siraj. Pakistan’s poor fielding and erratic bowling also played a crucial role in their second consecutive defeat. The match highlighted the importance of strategy and fielding efficiency.

Leaders from Indian neighborhood joined the PM swearing in ceremony

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in Delhi was attended by leaders from seven neighboring countries, highlighting India’s regional diplomatic engagements. The leaders included those from Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Seychelles, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Nepal, and Bhutan, who also attended a ceremonial banquet and met with Mr. Modi.
• During discussions, Modi emphasized the importance of deeper regional ties and India’s commitment to representing the Global South. Notably, the presence of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu suggested a potential reset in India-Maldives relations.
• While the event showcased India’s regional partnerships, it excluded countries like Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Pakistan, reflecting India’s current diplomatic stance.

European Union Parliament elections.

• Tens of millions of voters across the EU cast ballots on the final day of elections for the EU Parliament.
• Twenty-one of the EU’s 27 countries, including France and Germany, voted on this significant day.
• The election occurs amid global challenges such as Russia’s war in Ukraine, trade tensions, climate emergencies, and potential changes in US leadership.
• Over 360 million people were eligible to vote, though EU election turnout is historically low.
• The next EU Parliament will influence the selection of the European Commission’s leadership, with Ursula von der Leyen seeking a second term.
• Centrist parties are expected to maintain a majority but may be weakened by gains from far-right parties.
• France and Germany are key battlegrounds, with France seeing strong support for Marine Le Pen’s National Rally and Germany for the Christian Democrats and the far-right Alternative for Germany.
• Italy’s far-right ruling Brothers of Italy party, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, is expected to perform well.
• Preliminary election results are anticipated late on Sunday.

Israel war cabinet minister resigns

• Israeli war Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz resigned from the government, citing Prime Minister Netanyahu’s failure to develop a post-war strategy for Gaza and calling for early elections.
