5 signs to know that you were born to be a Lawyer

These days, legal dramas have become a big hit within the OTT industry. Movies and web series have telecasted the image of lawyers as those who are extraordinarily smart and intellectual. Unsurprisingly, these traits are very much common in lawyers who have now made their name in this field. A career as a lawyer is something that not every individual wants to pursue. It is because being a lawyer is not an easy task and you must have certain special characteristics if you want to become one. Here are five signs to gauge so to know whether you are born to become a lawyer?

Reasoned argumentative skills– If you have the capability to argue with someone with logic and reason, and you love this art; then it is a big sign that studying law is your thing. Being argumentative is one trait but being a person who gives logical arguments is another. A lawyer is someone who falls in the latter category and whose every argument is backed up by a good reason behind it.

Habitual reader– If you have to imagine a room of a lawyer, the first thing that comes to mind is books and journals. It is correct that lawyers do have to be good readers and have the patience and capacity to read hundreds of pages each day.  Sometimes, in order to prepare a case file, a lawyer may have to submit petitions amounting to 150-200 pages. Similarly, the lawyers are in the habit of reading long judgments that sometimes consist of 700-800 pages. Irrespective of this, they have to keep researching through reading books and digests. Hence, lawyers have to be very good readers who do not get mentally exhausted after reading for such a long duration.

Patience and tolerance- These two words are the key to the legal profession. A lawyer must have enough patience to hear their clients’ grievances, to battle the case before courtrooms that may take years to decide, to ideas that he/she may not respect particularly but have to defend as a code of conduct of their profession, etc. Most lawyers are tolerant of the idea of giving a fair hearing to every individual irrespective of whether they share the same viewpoint or not. So, a lawyer has to have these two elements rooted in their character.

A sense of being community-oriented– Being a lawyer is not about earning hefty checks every month. More than the law profession being only a source of earning; it is a duty towards the community to protect the interest of justice and to ensure that law is given the highest weightage in the society. Lawyers are officers of the court and they have a special duty to promote justice. Their acts must reflect their honest and sympathetic attitude towards society as they are entrusted with ensuring equal justice for all humans.

Being vocal against wrong forces- A lawyer is expected to stand up for things that do not comply with contemporary community standards. They must ensure that they are vocal about their opinions on issues that require the attention of society. Instead of being a mute spectator, a lawyer is expected to take a firm stand on any issue and shall be vocal about the right cause and moral uprightness. The lawyers must not possess fear but the strength to battle against all the odds. Thus, taking the right stand and voicing out their opinion is an important trait of being a lawyer.

If you possess these qualities in yourself or if you are working towards gaining such qualities, certainly, you are born to become a good lawyer as your skill-set reflects the same.
