CLAT comprises of different sections such as Logical Reasoning, English Language, Legal Reasoning, Current Affairs, etc. Humanly, a student can’t be already strong in all of these sections before one may start his preparation for the exam. A. Focus more on concepts than answering questions: CLAT as an exam wants students to have conceptual understanding. They don’t want students to rote learn the answers or methods of coming to an answer. What they look for is application of mind, and hence their focus is on asking application-based questions. Therefore, students should not develop the habit of directly solving the questions. Building a strong base is necessary for a building to set up its base on it. Hence, understanding the concepts followed by solving the questions based on such concepts is the correct method of preparing for any section. So, for example, if a student is answering questions on the right to equality under the subject of legal reasoning, they should not just learn the concept of equality but rather read about Article 14, Article 15, Article 16, and Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. Moreover, they should also see why these Articles were included in the Constitution, what was the objective of the Constitutional framers to add such sections in the Constitution, and why there was a need. Once a student prepares from this lens, they would become prepared for any question that may be asked on these concepts. So, prepare the foundation first rather than directly building a tower on a wetland.
B. Break it till you make it: This approach is very helpful for students who are facing difficulties in preparing any particular section. A student who fears a subject should study that in bits and pieces rather than putting all the time into it. Focus on gradually studying the section rather than mugging up everything in a set timeline. Start from studying basic concepts each day then move to studying chapters each day. It is important to first develop interest because, without interest, it is difficult to efficiently study and understand a section. Therefore, to develop interest, a focused approach is necessary so that a particular section does not daunt you but rather relaxes you.
C. Rely on studying from interesting books and materials: More often, students find a particular subject boring or tough because of the languages that are used in the reading material relied on by students. Preparing and writing books for students for their preparation is an art and requires an efficient team. Most books will talk about the same topic but not each of them will be an interesting read due to the language used to write content. Even for the CLAT exam, or any other law entrance exam, if a student is facing a problem in any particular subject, it is advisable that the student should take numerous mock tests that include subject-wise tests, section or topic-wise tests, and at last full-length mock tests. By giving subject and section-wise mock tests, a student gauges himself/herself in a particular area and analyzes the scope of improvement. Even more, such subject mock tests provide confidence to students before they appear for full-length mock tests. It is because such students are able to improve their weak subject first, and then appear for the full mock test, and because of that, they are not scared of getting lower marks in the full-length mock test, due to the subject they consider weak. So it is recommended that a student should first try to give a section or topic-wise mock test of their weak subject, followed by a complete subject mock test, and then finally, a full-length mock test, to overcome their weakness and any stress about the same.
