Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill, 2022
The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill 2022 aims to enhance data protection and accountability for internet companies, mobile apps, and businesses handling citizens’ data. It prioritizes the “Right to Privacy” and includes provisions for explicit consent, data fiduciaries’ responsibilities, cross-border data transfers, and individual rights. The Bill proposes the formation of the Data Protection Board of India (DPB) with regulatory, enforcement, and adjudication powers, albeit with limitations. It includes a provision to amend the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, through an exemption clause under Section 8(1)(j), which exempts personal information from disclosure.
Geographical Indication (GI) tag
The Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to seven products from India, including four from Rajasthan. The products are Jalesar Dhatu Shilp (metal craft), Goa Mankurad mango, Goan Bebinca (a traditional dessert), Udaipur Koftgari metal craft, Bikaner Kashidakari craft (mirror work), Jodhpur Bandhej craft (tying and dyeing), and Bikaner Usta Kala craft (gold nakashi work). These tags recognize and protect the unique origin and qualities of these products.
Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2023
The Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2023 aims to modify the governance of Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The Bill suggests expanding government involvement in appointing and dismissing IIM Directors, launching inquiries, and designating the President of India as the “Visitor” of IIMs, granting the President authority to conduct audits, order inquiries, and appoint or remove the chairpersons and directors of IIMs.
Pen Memorial project
The Pen Memorial, honoring M. Karunanidhi, is situated in the Bay of Bengal, 360 m from Chennai’s coast. It symbolizes Tamil culture and architecture and resembles the Veena instrument. The Thumba represents the pen pedestal, the neck signifies bridges, the music hole resembles a pen statue, and the peg symbolizes the canopy seating. The design also includes elements inspired by traditional Sikku Kolam drawings.
