The Vivad Se Vishwas scheme was launched in 2020 to reduce tax litigation. It allows settling disputed tax, interest, penalty, or fees related to assessment or reassessment orders. The dispute is settled on payment of 100% of the disputed tax and 25% of the disputed penalty, interest, or fee. In return, the taxpayer is granted immunity from levy of interest, penalty, and institution of any proceeding for prosecution for any offense under the Income-tax Act regarding matters covered in the declaration. However, disputes related to wealth, securities transactions, commodities transaction tax, and the equalization levy are not eligible for the scheme.
