Great Nicobar Island project
The Great Nicobar Island project, approved by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in November 2022, is a comprehensive development initiative for Great Nicobar Island in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. It entails a comprehensive development initiative, including an international container terminal, airport, and power plant. It aims to leverage the island’s strategic location for economic growth and national security. However, environmentalists raise concerns about ecological impact, loss of mangroves, and coral reef degradation due to development activities.

Restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets
The Indian Government has imposed restrictions on imports of laptops, tablets, and small-factor personal computers, requiring licenses for these products to be brought into and sold in the country. The restrictions could lead to longer import clearance times and potentially higher costs due to import duties and fees. However, the restrictions do not apply to imports under Baggage Rules, allowing travelers to bring such products without penalties. Devices for research, development, and repair abroad are exempt.

Communication Interoperability and Security Memorandum of Agreement (CISMOA)
Pakistan’s Cabinet has approved signing a new security pact, the Communication Interoperability and Security Memorandum of Agreement (CISMOA), with the U.S., suggesting a renewed defense collaboration and the potential for acquiring military hardware from the U.S. The agreement provides legal support for the U.S. to sell military equipment to countries.

Biological Diversity (Amendment) Bill, 2021
The Biological Diversity Act aims to conserve India’s biological diversity, ensuring sustainable use of resources and sharing benefits with local communities. However, the Biological Diversity (Amendment) Bill, 2021, influenced by “ease of doing business,” exempts “codified traditional knowledge” and the AYUSH industry from benefit sharing, raising concerns of exploitation.

Economic Community of West African States
ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) is a regional union of fifteen West African countries, founded in 1975 through the Treaty of Lagos. It aims to achieve collective self-sufficiency and create a single trade bloc for economic and trading unity. ECOWAS also serves as a peacekeeping force. It consists of two sub-regional blocs: the West African Economic and Monetary Union (focused on mainly French-speaking states) and the West African Monetary Zone (comprising mainly English-speaking countries), established in 2000.
