1) The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023 & the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023

  • This bill will increase seats from 107 to 114
  • 7 seats for SC and 9 for ST communities
  • The bill also empowers the Lt. Governor-to nominate 3 members to the assembly
  • The effective strength of the Assembly is 83, which the amendment seeks to increase as 90.

2) Punjab Governor has reserved three Bills

  • All were passed by the State Assembly for the consideration of the President.
  • As per Article 200 of the Constitution of India.
  • The three Bills are — The Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023,
  • The Punjab Universities Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2023
  • The Punjab Police (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

3) The ethics committee of Parliament

Why in NEWS?

  • Ethics committee of the Lok Sabha is believed to have recommended the expulsion of Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Mahua Moitra from the Lok Sabha for her “unethical conduct” and “breach of privileges”

About Ethics Committee in Parliament:

  • The genesis of formation of the Ethics Committee in Parliament can be traced to a resolution adopted at the Presiding Officers Conference held in New Delhi in October, 1996.
  • Each house of the parliament has its own ethics committee.
  • Ethics committee in Lok Sabha
  • It was first constituted in 2000.
  • Composition: It consists of not more than fifteen members nominated by the Speaker.
  • Term: They shall hold office for a term not exceeding one year.

4) India reminds Myanmar to return to ‘federal democracy’

  • Federalism refers to a system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and various constituent units, such as states or provinces.
  • In India, the constitution divides powers and responsibilities between the central government and the state governments.

5) Garba Included in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO

  • ‘Garba’ was on Wednesday included in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
  • Garba is a dance form native to the Indian state of Gujarat, performed in October to honour the Hindu Deity of Divinity, Goddess Durga
