On this day, Delhi became the capital of India. Earlier, Kolkata was the capital of India.

  • The foundation of New Delhi, the capital of India, was laid by the then Emperor George V.
  • During the Delhi Durbar on 12 December 1911, it was announced to shift the capital of India from Kolkata to Delhi.

SC upholds repeal of J&K’s special status

  • Five­ judges ConstitutionBench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud of the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the power of the President to abrogate special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 regarding the reorganisation of the full fledged State to two Union Territories and the removal of its privileges.
  • The court said the President’s decision in 2019 was the culmination of a collaborative exercise in the last 70 years between J&K and the Union.
  • Internal Sovereignty – J&K does not have any special internal sovereignty from other states under Article 370
  • Article 370 was a temporary provision
  • Dissolution of Constituent Assembly – it did not affect the powers of the president to declare it inoperative

Retail inflation is now ‘stable’

  • India’s consumer price inflation is now “stable” and within the 2% to 6% tolerance band, having dipped from an average of 7.1% between April and October 2022  to an average 5.4% over the same period of this year,

NITI Aayog unveils inaugural delta ranking for Aspirational Blocks Programme (ABP)

  • Tiriyani Block of Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district, Telangana and Kaushambi Block of Kaushambi District, Uttar Pradesh
  • secured 1st and 2nd ranks respectively in the first delta ranking.
  • Delta Ranking captures incremental change in blocks ranked based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) categorized into five themes.

About ABP

  • Launched in January 2023 by NITI Aayog, ABP is built on the success of the Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP).
  • It focuses on improving governance to enhance the quality of life of citizens in the most difficult and relatively underdeveloped blocks of India.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) celebrates its 75th anniversary

  • Motivated by past world wars, UDHR was approved by the N. General Assembly (UNGA) on Dec. 10, 1948.
