On this day in 1973, Australia’s iconic Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. Utzon’s innovative and imaginative design had won an international competition in 1957, making the Sydney Opera House one of the world’s most recognizable and celebrated architectural landmarks

Gujarat HC sentences four policemen to 14 days in jail in Kheda flogging case
In Gujarat, four policemen have been sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment and fined ₹2,000 by the Division Bench of the Gujarat High Court for contempt of court. The case arose from the public flogging of five Muslim men in Kheda district in October 2022. The victims of the incident had declined monetary compensation and instead sought accountability for the police officers’ contempt of court and noncompliance with Supreme Court guidelines on police conduct during arrest and detention.

The shape of climate justice in a warming India
The India’s position on climate change and renewable energy, particularly in the context of the G20 Summit held in Delhi. While the summit aimed to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency, it failed to reach a consensus on the phasing out of fossil fuels.  Despite ambitious goals for clean energy adoption and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Bombardment of Gaza will continue, says Israel’s envoy
Israel’s Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, has stated that Israel will not halt its bombardment of Gaza and intends to proceed with a ground offensive to eliminate Hamas’s capabilities and secure the release of approximately 200 Israeli hostages taken by the group during recent terror attacks. He expressed hope that India, which has not designated Hamas as a terror group, would do so.
