Summary of Today’s News

Tamil Nadu withdraws general consent to CBI.
As per Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) needs consent from the State Governments to conduct investigations in their jurisdiction. A general consent granted to CBI by the State Government facilitates it to carry out investigations without seeking permission from the State for every case. Tamil Nadu became the tenth State in India to withdraw general consent to CBI.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) dropped to 3.48%
India’s Wholesale Price Index (WPI) remained in a deflationary mode for a second consecutive month in May 2023. The contraction in prices was recorded in all sectors. WPI for May 2023 was 3.48% compared to 16.6% in May 2022. The decline in the inflation rate is primarily attributed to the fall in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, food products, textiles, non-food articles, crude petroleum, natural gas, chemical, and chemical products. The Office of the Economic Advisor under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry releases WPI.

National Security Strategy (NSS) of Germany
Germany’s first-ever National Security Strategy (NSS) released identified China as a “partner, competitor, and systematic rival.” It has recognized Russia as the most significant threat to peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic area. The strategy stated increasing defense expenditure to 2% of GDP over a multiyear period, as set by NATO for its member countries.

Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS)
The Union Government has discontinued the sale of rice and wheat from the central pool under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) to the State Government. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) will continue to operate the sale of rice under the OMSS for the Northeastern States, Hilly States, and States facing law and order situations and natural calamities at a current rate of Rs.3,400 per quintal.
