Today in History (June 26th, 1945)

On 26th June 1945, the Charter of the United Nations was signed by the fifty member countries in the Herbst Theatre auditorium in San Francisco, the United States of America. It came into force on 24th October 1945 and consisted of a preamble, 19 chapters consisting of 111 articles, providing the purpose and framework of the United Nations and its governing structure.

Summary of Today’s News

India-Egypt ink deal on strategic partnership.
India and Egypt signed a deal on a strategic partnership. The two countries also signed three memoranda of understanding (MoU) in agriculture, archaeology, antiquities, and competition law. They also discussed multilateral cooperation at G-20 and other subjects such as food, energy security, and climate change. The meeting was held at the Al-Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo, Egypt.

Order of the Nile
The Order of the Nile was established in 1915 by Sultan Hussein Kamel and reconstituted in 1953 as the highest State honor of the Republic of Egypt. The Prime Minister of India, Sri Narendra Modi, has been bestowed with the Order of Nile in 2023. The other awardees of the Order in the past include (L) Sultan Qaboos of Oman, (L) Nelson Mandela, Suharto, the former President of Indonesia, etc.

Meghalaya Tribal Council to oppose Uniform Civil Code (UCC)
The Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Pyniaid Sing Syiem, has said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would affect the customs, traditions, practices, inheritance, marriage, and religious freedom of the Khasi Community. The Khasis are a matrilineal community where the youngest daughter becomes the custodian of the family property, and a child is given their mother’s surname. Garo and Jaintia tribes of Meghalaya are matrilineal communities. As per Article 44 of the Constitution, the State has to secure for the citizens to secure uniform civil code throughout the territory of India.

Czech Ladies Open Title 2023
Diksha Dagar won her second Ladies European Tour (LET) title by winning the Tipsport Czech Ladies Open at the Royal Beroun Golf Club. She hails from the Jhajjar district of Haryana and won the gold medal in 2021 and a silver medal in 2017 at the Deaflympics.
