In 1642, Dutch navigator Abel Janszoon Tasman set sail from Batavia (now Jakarta) on an expedition to explore the southern lands and investigate the possibility of a sea passage from the east to Chile. On November 24, 1642, he became the first European to sight the island of Tasmania, initially named \u201cAnthoonij van Diemenslandt\u201d. The island was later renamed Tasmania in the 19th century.<\/p>\n

She went on to become the first woman judge in the Supreme Court of India in 1989. She also served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu from 1997 to 2001.<\/p>\n
