Today in History (January 25th<\/sup>, 1950)<\/h1>\n

25th January is the foundation day of the\u00a0Election Commission of India<\/strong>\u00a0(ECI) which came into existence in\u00a01950<\/strong>. This day was first celebrated in\u00a02011<\/strong> to encourage young voters to take part in the electoral process.<\/p>\n

Bharat Ratna<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Karpoori Thakur, a prominent Gandhian socialist leader and former Bihar chief minister will be awarded the \u2018Bharat Ratna\u2019 posthumously.<\/p>\n

It is the\u00a0highest civilian Award of the country which was instituted in\u00a0the year 1954.<\/p>\n

    EligibilityCriteria<\/u><\/strong>:<\/h4>\n
      \n
    • Any person without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex is eligible for these awards.<\/li>\n
    • Though\u00a0usually conferred on India-born citizens.<\/li>\n
    • But the Bharat Ratna has been awarded to one naturalized citizen, Mother Teresa, and to two non-Indians, Pakistan national\u00a0Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan and former South African President\u00a0Nelson Mandela.<\/li>\n
    • Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri became the first individual to be honoured posthumously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • It is awarded in\u00a0recognition of exceptional service\/performance of the highest order in any field of\u00a0human endeavour.<\/li>\n
    • The recommendations for Bharat Ratna are made\u00a0by the Prime Minister himself to the President and no formal recommendations for this are necessary.<\/li>\n
    • The number of annual awards is restricted to a\u00a0maximum of three in a particular year.<\/li>\n
    • On conferment of the award, the recipient receives a\u00a0Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a medallion.<\/li>\n
    • The award\u00a0does not carry any monetary grant.<\/li>\n
    • In terms of\u00a0Article 18 (1) of the Constitution, the\u00a0award cannot be used as a prefix or suffix to the recipient’s name.<\/li>\n
    • However, an award winner may use expression in their biodata\/letterhead\/visiting card etc. to indicate that he\/she is a recipient of the award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

      • Karpoori Thakur was greatly influenced by\u00a0Mahatma Gandhi and Satyanarayan Sinha<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      • He joined the\u00a0All India Students Federation (AISF)<\/strong>, the oldest student organisation in India, during his schooling days.<\/li>\n
      • He was inspired by Indian nationalistic thought, and left his graduation studies to\u00a0join the Quit India Movement<\/strong>, a massive mobilisation started by Mahatma Gandhi in 1942 to force the colonial British rulers to leave India.<\/li>\n
      • He became a legend because of his\u00a0successful fights for the rights of the workers<\/strong>and thus pushed for reservations for backward classes.<\/li>\n
      • He started his\u00a0fast-unto-death<\/strong>agitation for the cause of the\u00a0labourers in Telco<\/strong>\u00a0in the year 1970, and was\u00a0arrested for leading worker strikes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      • His life revolved around thetwin pillars of simplicity and social justice.<\/strong>\n

        • He wanted to\u00a0address the systemic inequalities<\/strong>that plagued Indian society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • OBC Politics:\u00a0<\/strong>He is known as the pioneer of OBC politics in Bihar. He implemented quotas for backward classes in the state, a move that was pivotal in\u00a0setting the stage for the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations<\/strong>.\n

          • He appointed the\u00a0Mungeri Lal Commission in 1970<\/strong>, that identified the 128\u00a0\u2018backward<\/strong>\u2019 and\u00a0 94\u00a0\u2018most backward<\/strong>\u2019 communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
