Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, was born on 12th May, 1820. She organized care for wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. The International Nurses Day is celebrated every year on 12th May to commemorate her birthday, and to honour the contribution made by nurses to society.

Monkeypox is no longer a public health emergency: WHO
The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared that monkeypox is no longer a global health emergency due to sharply falling number of cases worldwide. WHO has emphasised that the disease remains a threat in Africa, where it is endemic in Central and West Africa. The disease is caused by the monkeypox virus.

ISSF World Cup 2023
Sarabjot Singh and T.S. Divya beat World champions Zorana Arunovic and Damir Mikec of Serbia 16-14 to clinch the mixed air pistol gold in the World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan. Earlier, Rhythm Sangwan had won the bronze medal in women’s air pistol in the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup, 2023.

GST e-invoicing to include smaller firms from 1st August, 2023.
The Union Government has made it mandatory for all businesses with an annual turnover of Rs. 5 crores to use GST e-invoices from 1st August, 2023. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs launched the ‘Automated Return Scrutiny Model’ for carrying out scrutiny of GST returns of Centre-administered tax returns based on data analytics.

Delhi Government has control over officers: Supreme Court
The Hon’ble Supreme Court directed the Delhi Government to legislate and to wield control over civil servants deputed in the departments of the Delhi Government. However, the Court reiterated that the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NTCD) Government will have no power to legislate on public order, police and land.

ICMR, AYUSH Ministry sign agreement on research.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Union Ministry of AYUSH signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration and cooperation for research in integrative medicine. It will facilitate the evolution of AYUSH departments in AIIMS into the Departments of Integrated Medicine.
