Ritu Chhabaria versus Union of India
The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in the Ritu Chhabaria versus Union of India, 2023, that the Central investigating agencies cannot deny accused persons their right to default bail by filing multiple supplementary chargesheets and seeking renewed custody. According to Section 167 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), an accused is entitled to default bail if the investigating agency fails to file a chargesheet within 60 days from the date of remand.
Inflation slips to an 18-month low of 4.7%
The Consumer Price Inflation of India for April 2023 slid to an 18-month low of 4.7%, below 6% upper tolerance limit of RBI, for the second consecutive months. The drop in inflation was aided by the base effects from April 2022, when the inflation hit 7.8%.
Model Prisons Act
The Model Prisons Act of the Union Home Ministry aims to reform the prison administration with focus on the reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners in India. It includes a provision for security assessment and segregation of prisoners, individual sentence planning, grievance redressal, the establishment of a prison development board, and a focus on the physical and mental well-being of prisoners.

California State Senate Passes Bill Banning Caste-Based Discrimination
The California State Senate in the USA has passed a bill banning caste-based discrimination, bringing the state closer to prohibiting discrimination on the basis of caste. Earlier this year, Seattle became the first US city to pass legislation banning caste-based discrimination, with the city council voting 6-1. Last year, all California State Universities, the largest public university system in the US, added caste to its anti-discrimination policy.
