There was a news item in The Times of India dated 27-10-2013 (Delhi edition) on the front page “Litigation-Hit India Inc Raises Legal Bar”. It was highlighted that in the year 2012 Corporate India alone spent $1 billion (Rs. 5500 crores) on legal fee on various legal battles patent wars and related disputes. Leading business houses including Tata Essar and Aditya Birla Groups are reported to have huge teams of in-house lawyers. Lawyers like Charles Prince, Lloyd Blankfein and Brain Moynihan are leading or have lead in the past organizations such as Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America respectively.
The world of Law has always been fascinating and has created renowned leaders, politicians as well as eminent lawyers We owe our independence to lawyers such as Shri M.K. Gandhi, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Pandit Motilal Nehru, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, C. Rajgopalachari, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Lala Lajpat Rai, Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, Asaf Ali, Chitranjan Dass, Pandit Madan Mohan Malvia, V.K. Krishna Menon, Saifuddin Kitchlew, B.R. Ambedkar and others. The framing and adoption of the Indian Constitution that ushered us in a new era of social, economic and political justice was possible only due to the relentless efforts of eminent freedom fighters who were lawyers too. Needless to mention that the Constitution of India is a very pillar upon which our democracy stands.
In other countries as well, lawyers like Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, Margret Thatcher and Barack Obama have played prominent roles. The role of lawyers in modern world is becoming important day by day. It was visualized by our leaders as well as academicians. Therefore, in India for the first time on the pattern of the leading American law schools, the case law method system of teaching was introduced by Delhi University in 1980s. The emerging role of lawyers required diverse skills, updated knowledge and adoption of latest techniques. At present, a lawyer plays a wider role which requires him to have divergent skills, different perspective and constant research and adoption of latest tools of analysis.
